The dining room in this 1796 brick farmhouse exudes 18th-century charm, but the food is decidedly from the 21st century. Former San Francisco restaurant chef-owners Will Dodson and Ruth Schimmelpfennig create inventive three- and four-course prix-fixe menus ($65 to $75) with such delicacies as venison medallions and chili and house-made chive-and-nutmeg potato gnocchi. In the back is a local favorite, Max's Tavern, which serves upscale pub fare such as beer-battered oysters
and dry-rubbed pulled pork.

We return to the Barnard Inn Restaurant and Max's Tavern every time we're in Vermont. The food is outstanding, the setting idyllic, and you're always made to feel at home. You'll never want to leave! Enjoy!
