Hiking

Mt. Horrid. For great views from a vertigo-inducing cliff, hike up the Long Trail to Mt. Horrid. The steep, hour-long hike starts at the top of Brandon Gap (about 8 miles east of Brandon on Route 73). Rte. 73, Brandon, VT, 05733.

Falls of Lana. A large turnout on Route 53 marks a moderate trail to the Falls of Lana. Rte. 53, Brandon, VT.

Mt. Independence. West of Brandon, four trails—two short ones of less than 1 mile each and two longer ones—lead to the abandoned Revolutionary War fortifications at Mt. Independence. To reach them, take the first left turn off Route 73 west of Orwell and go right at the fork. The road will turn to gravel and fork again; take a sharp left-hand turn toward a small marina.
