St. George Winter Bird Festival. Bird-watchers gather in St. George every January to peep at the nearly 400 feathered species. After a Thursday-night kickoff event, join in two full days of field trips, exhibits, lectures, and activities. 1851 S. Dixie Downs Horse Races. For more than 40 years, two Saturdays in April are reserved for quarter horse racing at the Washington County Fair Grounds in Hurricane. 435/632–2136. stgeorgelions.com.
Western Legends Roundup. Held every August at various venues in town, this festival is a must for anyone with a love of the cowboy era. For three days in late August Kanab plays host to cowboy poets, musicians, and character actors from Old West TV series of yesteryear. Native American dancers and weavers, arts-and-crafts vendors, quilt shows, a parade, tours to Western movie sites, a chuck wagon dinner, campfire entertainment, and a film festival draw enthusiasts from all over the country. 435/644–3444. westernlegendsroundup.com.
Dixie Roundup. This annual rodeo has been a tradition for more than 80 years. Held over three days in mid-September, the event includes both young mutton busters and professional bull riders, and is held in the evenings on the green grass of Sun Bowl Stadium. 435/632–2136. stgeorgelions.com. $10.
