Park City Travel Guide

With more than 400 miles of public trails and smooth blacktop roads stretching in every direction, it's no wonder Park City is home to a number of internationally elite mountain and road bikers. You can join local road or mountain bikers most nights in the summer for free group rides sponsored by Park City bike shops.

Mountain Trails Foundation. In 2012, Park City was the first community ever designated a Gold Level Ride Center by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, thanks in large part to the relentless work of the Mountain Trails Foundation, which oversees more than 400 miles of area trails. The accolade is based upon bike shops, trail access, variety, and more. Pick up a map at any local bike shop or get details online from the Mountain Trails Foundation. Park City, UT. 435/649–6839.

Canyons Bike Park. With the opening of the only lift-served "gravity" bike park in Utah in 2012, Canyons Resort has unique mountain-biking terrain that riders of all levels will want to try. Choose from a half-dozen trails of varying difficulty. The term gravity suggests that you hardly have to pedal: the natural flow of the trail will carry you and your mountain bike through trees, over bridges and obstacles, and through grassy meadows. Bikes, lessons, and protective padding are all available in the rental shop. 4000 Canyons Resort Dr., Park City, UT, 84098. 435/649–5400.

Canyons Resort. Since 2011, Utah's largest ski resort has transformed into a summer adventure land for cyclists, with a lift-served gravity park and miles of cross-country and downhill trails. Bike rentals are available. 4000 Canyons Resort Dr., Park City, UT, 84098. 435/615–3449.

Cole Sport. Road bikers can ride with a pack each Monday evening from June to mid-September from Cole Sport. You can rent mountain and road bikes from Cole; be ready to ride from the shop at 6 pm. 1615 Park Ave., Park City, UT, 84060. 435/649–4806 or 800/345–2938.

Deer Valley Resort. For a little help getting uphill, Deer Valley Resort offers lift-assisted mountain biking or hiking daily mid-June to September. Bike rentals are available at Snow Park Lodge, Silver Lake Lodge, and Yurt at Empire Canyon. If you're looking to learn to mountain bike or improve your skills, Deer Valley Mountain Bike School offers clinics and guided tours in a variety of public and private packages from mid-June to September. Silver Lake Village and Snow Park Lodge at Deer Valley, Park City, UT, 84060. 435/649–1000 or 800/424–3337.

Jans Mountain Outfitters. When the snow melts, Jans has everything you need to hit the road on two wheels. Whether you're into mountain bikes, road bikes, or cruisers, stop by to rent or demo something new, or to tune your own wheels. 1600 Park Ave., Park City, UT, 84060. 435/649–4949 or 800/745–1020.

Park City Mountain Resort. Mountain bikers and hikers can ride several chairs at Park City Mountain Resort to access the on-mountain trail complex. An all-day lift pass is about $25. Equipment rentals are available. 1310 Lowell Ave., Park City, UT, 84060. 435/649–8111 or 800/222–7275.

Silver Star Ski & Sport. Look for Vidalia the bulldog at Silver Star Ski & Sport. While the dog watches the shop, friendly guides lead two-hour mountain-bike tours ($75, including bike rental). Ask about free neighborhood rides that return to Silver Star for live music on summer weeknights. Cruiser, road, and mountain bike rentals are available. 1825 Three Kings Dr., Park City, UT, 84060. 435/645–7827.

White Pine Touring. Every Thursday in the summer, mountain bikers of all levels gather at 6 pm for a free guided mountain-bike ride. On the last Thursday of June, July, and August, the White Pine guides prepare a barbecue, too. Women are invited to a women-only ride on Tuesday. For both rides, meet at the shop at 6 pm—earlier if you need to rent a bike. Guided road-biking, mountain-biking, and hiking tours are also available throughout the summer. 1790 Bonanza Dr., Park City, UT, 84060. 435/649–8710.
