Sports and the Outdoors in La Sal Mountains

Sports and the Outdoors

Once snow flies, portions of La Sal Mountain Loop road are impassable, but a well-maintained hut-to-hut system operated by Tag-A-Long Expeditions (452 N. Main St., Moab 435/259–8946 or 800/453–3292 makes this a wonderful place for cross-country skiing for those of moderate to expert ability. Since roads at the top of the mountain are impassable to cars in winter, you drive to the ski trail's parking lot and ski up to one of two huts run by Tag-A-Long, where company employees will meet you in a snowcat with your supplies. After a brief explanation on how to use the hut’s appliances, you are left to enjoy the solitude. Lodging in the huts is $36 per person per night, and it costs $80 to deliver your supplies via snowcat. Should you require subsequent snowcat transport, it's an additional $160 per day. At the end of your expedition, you can ski back to the mountain-top trailhead and parking lot, where you get your own vehicle for the ride back to town. Marked routes link the huts.
