Flaming Gorge Reservoir provides ample opportunities for boating and water sports of all kinds, whether you prefer lounging on the deck of a rented houseboat or skiing behind a high-performance speedboat. Old-timers maintain that Flaming Gorge provides the best lake fishing in the state, yielding rainbow and lake trout, smallmouth bass, and Kokanee salmon. For the best river fishing, try the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam, where rainbow and brown trout are plentiful and big, but note that only artificial lures and fly-fishing are permitted, as bait fishing isn't allowed on the river. Fed by cold water from the bottom of the lake, this stretch has been identified as one of the best trout fisheries in the world. The Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is a calm, scenic stretch of water, ideal for risk-averse folk or for families who want to take smaller children on rafting trips, but who don't want to worry about them falling into white water. Most boating facilities close from October through mid-March.
