Panhandle Sights

West Texas A&M Review

Founded in 1910 with the un-splashy name "West Texas State Normal College," this institute of higher education has grown, modernized, changed its name, and now educates about 7,000 full-time students each year. Notable faculty and students over the years have included professional wrestlers, NFL football players, a former first lady of Texas, artists such as Georgia O'Keefe, and business executives like current president and CEO of AT&T Mobility, Stanley Sigman. Campus sites to see include the Kimbrough Memorial Stadium, the historic "Old Main" building, a pedestrian mall, and a new buffalo statue. The university also houses the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum which covers the region's geological and cultural history. Campus tours are available by appointment for prospective students and their families.
