In the 1850s the U.S. government was fortifying its frontiers with a second string of forts designed to protect travelers and residents from Indian attacks. Fort Phantom Hill was one of those forts, but only occupied for three years and damaged by fire. Today three of the originals structures and lots of chimneys remain to give visitors a visual clue about what life was like in wild and wooly Texas.
