Fodor's Review

Once you get to Medina, you're slowly slipping farther from civilization and into the Western frontier. But if you can get comfortable with that idea, travel a little farther west towards Vanderpool on Ranch RoAD 337 and then north on Farm RoAD 187 to Lost Maples State Park. You'll find yourself on arguably one of the most breathtaking drives in the state. If you're here during the fall, you'll likely be joined by a few thousand other travelers trying to catch one of the few patches of Texas land where you can actually witness a change in season. At Lost Maples the fall foliage rivals that of the Colorado golden aspens or the magnificent shades of Vermont and New Hampshire maples. Arrive early; the park only allows 250 cars; note that visitors pack the place during October and November weekends. Other times of year you'll have the park almost to yourself. Even in the stark grayness of winter, Lost Maples is lovely. Stroll the Maple Trail amid the towering trees to see rough-hewn limestone canyons, serene creeks, and emerald pools.
