Escondida Review
Spanish for "hidden," Escondida is a pristine, luxe Mexican-style villa. The small resort and spa is the creation of property host Christy Carnes and Texas television personality Bob Philips. In their stately manor, each guest room is outfitted with elegant hardwood and iron furniture and subtle Mexican tile accents. Some rooms include gas fireplaces. Don't leave without a trip to the spa—you won't be sorry!

My 3 girlfriends and I booked a girls getaway weekend at this "resort". I don't even know where to begin to tell you of our horrific experience at this place. Let's begin with the food. Their website touts a dinner which includes appetizers, salad entree and dessert as well as a full breakfast. Nowhere does it indicate that people with dietary restrictions need to tell them in advance or that vegetarian options are only available upon prior request. Nor does it indicate that if you don't like the food, there is no other food anywhere on the property or within 20 miles for that matter. As a customer, I have every right to assume I would be able to find something I could eat. I am not a full vegetarian mind you. I do eat poultry and fish. Despite these facts, I was scolded upon check in by Jo for not telling them I don't eat beef or pork. Dinner was to be meat lasagna and breakfast would be sausage and eggs. She begrudgingly stated she would see what could be done that maybe I could have some toast or pastries for breakfast. I thanked her for her effort and even apologized for the inconvenience. I hoped there would be some appetizers or at least a salad I could eat. Imagine my surprise at finding that the "appetizers" were ritz crackers and a block of cream cheese with sauce poured over it, and the "salad" was lettuce, just lettuce. They did give me some chicken salad though so I did not complain. Dessert was store bought brownie bites with Hershey's syrup. Not exactly "resort" or "spa"level cuisine.
The next morning we went to breakfast which consisted of chorizo sausage and eggs together, tortillas, yogurt bananas and apples. That's it. When I approached the egg dish the "chef" Dawn said, "yup, it's got meat in it". And she said it with such contempt we were appalled. I took a banana and sat down. When I expressed my dissatisfaction a little while later, she yelled at me saying I was obviously unhappy and what could she do for me. I was mortified. I stated I felt she could have offered to scramble an egg for me or maybe put out the toast and pastries Jo had mentioned. Again she yelled at me saying I should have asked and do I want an egg or not. I have never been treated so disrespectfully in my entire life. We did not step foot in that dining room again. We checked out in the morning simply because it was too late to go anywhere else but you can rest assured we will never be back. The owner and staff obviously have no interest in customer service. I have since learned as much by looking at other reviews to which the owner has responded that in his opinion, the customer is not always right. With an attitude like that, it's no wonder the staff feels no need to offer even the most common courtesy to guests. Based on our experience, this property has no business being called a resort. -

For my Wife's Birthday we decided to see the fall colors at Lost Maples. What a beautiful site ! Nature at its best.
Unfortunately what came after was Escondida. A clean place with an average room and beautiful surroundings: all eclipsed by absence of service and the rudeness of the staff ! At dinner only pork. After asking if there was a second option/alternative the answer: " We only cook one meal and one meal only" Not even an apology as the price paid for the room was a premium even when compared to 5 star resorts in Maui for example. The result: dinner was bread and butter ! The breakfast the following morning was: black beans and tortillas with eggs: No alternative. This negative review is not about the menu only but more importantly the absence of service and the rudeness of Dawn the "owner/keeper". DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY PRETTY PICS. You will starve and be treated with disrespect ! -

The Escondida Resort is a hidden secret. My wife and I enjoyed our weekend together in the Texas Hill Country so much we had a hard time deciding whether to share our experience with others, because when you find a GREAT thing you sometimes want to keep it to yourself. From the moment you enter the resort gates, til you are serviced an incredible meal, to the crystal clear stars, to the beautiful surroundings. What a serene place. Dawn, the chef and property manager. and Pam, office manager are awesome and go over the top in making sure that your stay is complete and anticipating your every need. My wife and I will be making a trip back every 3-6 months just to get a break from the hustle bustle of life. What a treat. I would strongly recommend Escondida Resort to all I know.
