Those looking to dig a little deeper into the history of this area may find a few answers at the Pioneer Museum Complex and its second branch, the Vereins Kirche Museum (Main St. in Market Sq. 830/997-7832), a reproduction of an eight-sided church that was Fredericksburg's first public building. Both museums include permanent exhibits with collections of woodworking tools, textile pieces, furniture, paintings, and a number of domestic artifacts from the area. The collection of historic buildings at the Pioneer Museum includes an 1849 pioneer log home and store, an old First Methodist Church, and a smokehouse. Also on the premises stands a typical 19th-century "Sunday house." Sunday houses catered to farmers and their families who traveled long distances to attend church services and had to stay the night. With the advent of the automobile, such accommodations became obsolete.
