Set on 35 acres with more than 3,500 animals of 600 species, the San Antonio Zoo is consistently ranked as one of the best zoos in the country, and with the nation's third-largest animal collection, most in outdoor habitats. The zoo is best known for its excellent collection of African antelopes, as well as other hoofed species. Exhibits include the butterfly house, where about 20 species fly freely about, often coming to rest on visitors; animals from the African plains and the Amazon; critters from the prairies -- both dogs and chickens; and cranes from around the world. The Children's Zoo, a $3 million addition, features rides, a nursery, a playground, an education center, and, the highlight, the "Round-the-World Voyage of Discovery" exhibit.
