Fodor's Expert Review The Monterey
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
A local hangout in the hip historic King William District that took San Antonio by storm when it opened in 2010 with a gastropub menu focused on serving up "glorified bar food," according to chef/owner Andrew Vasquez. The "Monty," as many locals call it, has a solid and loyal fan base eager to cram into the relatively small space on any given day of the week. The menu changes regularly but often include items such as fried chicken with bacon-fat hushpuppies, Frito-pie Po-boys, house-made pickles, and Strueb Ranch cured beef tongue Rueben with sprout kraut, Russian dressing and fontina cheese. Weekend brunch is typically a fun-filled affair.
