Fodor's Review

This popular restaurant in downtown San Antonio is housed in a stately 1860 home built by the founder of Pioneer Flour Mills. Breakfast goodies—fluffy Pioneer Brand biscuits, breakfast tacos (with eggs, beans, and potatoes), waffles, and pastries—are half of the reason to eat here. The other half is the 1920s art-nouveau decor of stained glass, beveled glass, etched glass, and plant motifs that creates the illusion of a fine home's conservatory.

Beautiful location, scrumptious food, great service

My daughter and I went to The Guenther House for lunch during a recent "Girls' Vacation" in San Antonio. A friend had told her that she simply had to take her mother to Guenther's because it served such good food, and was so lovely. It did not disappoint. I had the sweet cream waffle, and my daughter had pancakes, and we both had the sausage patties. Everything was delicious, and our waiter was a gracious, charming mature man who even found out

the supplier of the delicious sausage at my request. The House Blend coffee was full-bodied and satisfying, and our bill was modest. When you go, also tour the rest of the Guenther House, which includes a gift shop where various Pioneer Mills foods are sold, among other things. We bought a Sweet Cream Cake mix which we promptly made when we got home, and I've never had a better cake. Seriously. It needs no frosting or glaze, and it melts in your mouth. I'm ordering more online! Don't miss this experience; it takes you to another time, and everyone is so friendly and polite! Rare and appreciated!

Guenther House Review

Previously read reviews about the restaurant and gave it a go. Wow! Banana pancakes with mucho bananas and the perfect amount of syrup. Everything was so well portioned that years of experience making breakfast food really shows. The thick cut apple bacon was almost too much, the saltiness and fat just melted in mouth - the perfect compliment to the pancakes and syrup. I made time the next weekend to bring my wife with me and, again, the quality and

craftsmanship shined. Love it. Breakfast for two was cheap compared with our satiation, about $30.

Very nice surprise!

I was craving breakfast food at 12:30 p.m. and the concierge at the Marriott at Riverwalk told me to try Guenther House. After a Trolley ride I got there and thought it was going to cost an arm and a leg to eat there since it's in a beautiful old home (I was picturing old ladies wearing hats and sipping tea, LOL!). I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the prices are comparable to Bob Evans or Denny's. I asked the waitress if I could get

half an order of the biscuits and gravy and I could for $2.50. I also ordered a short stack of pancakes (2 instead of 3) and got pecans added on top $3.75 plus $.50 for the pecans. The biscuit is not your typical short round dense kind. It’s square, tall and fluffy. The sausage gravy was so good! I start in on the pancakes and I think I went up to heaven for a few seconds! So yummy!!! I had ordered a coke. So for the food, drink and tip I got out of there for $11.00 and stuffed! The Guenther House, as I found out when I made a trip to the bathroom, is actually a historical home so don't forget to look around. Anytime I go back to San Antonio, I'm definitely stopping by this restaurant for breakfast!
