Sam Rayburn House Museum Review

Famous Texas politician Sam Rayburn, who was elected at age 24 to the state congress, grew up in Bonham, 30 mi east of Sherman. He became Speaker of the House four years later, and by age 30 was representing his district in Washington. He continued to serve until his late 70s. Just outside of Bonham is the Sam Rayburn House Museum, the two-story, 12-room home Rayburn used as a Texas refuge from the Washington political world. Tours are given on the hour. In Bonham proper is the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum (800 W. Sam Rayburn Dr. (Hwy. 56). 903/583-2455. Free. Mon.-Fri. 10-5, Sat. 1-5, Sun. 2-5), with Rayburn's library and his speaker's rostrum as well as photographs, political cartoons, and other mementos of his life of public service.
