North-Central Texas -- other than the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex -- isn't usually thought of as a destination in and of itself. However, many find themselves going through this area because they're heading elsewhere in the state via Interstate 35. In Texas, I-35 stretches from the Oklahoma-Texas border down to Laredo at the Texas-Mexico border, passing through Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio -- all the state's biggest cities except Houston.
We've created this chapter to help you see what interesting things are lined up along the northern two-thirds of the I-35 corridor, should you decide to mosey off the highway for little look-see. We reckon you'll be surprised at some of the things to do along the way. Did you know, for example, that Waco is home to the Dr Pepper Museum and Texas Rangers Hall of Fame? Or that there's a Munster Mansion (based on the TV show) in Waxahachie?
The trick is that you have to get off the highway to really see the sights. In this chapter, we've tried to keep you close to this state throughway, with towns and sites that don't venture too far off the beaten path, but we've also included a few places that warrant a somewhat longer excursion. So don't rush by too quickly. Slow up on the gas and pull over to poke around at great shops and intriguing museums.
