Houston is a stop along Amtrak's Sunset Limited route, which runs between Louisiana and California. Houston's train station, originally built as the Southern Pacific railroad station in 1905, is located at 902 Washington Ave., behind the Main Post Office.

A few years ago Houston's light-rail system—METROrail—made its debut along Main Street, traveling from UH-Downtown to Reliant Park, home of the NFL Texans, and passing through the Museum District, Hermann Park, and the Texas Medical Center along the way. Several new routes are planned, and the system will reach more parts of the city in the coming years.
