When to Go

Trails here are rarely crowded, except in fall, when foliage changes colors in McKittrick Canyon, and during Spring Break in March. Still, this is a very remote area, and you probably won't find too much congestion at any time. Hikers are more apt to explore backcountry trails in spring and fall, when it's cooler but not too cold. Snow, not uncommon in the winter months, can linger in the higher elevations.
