East Texas Sights

View all »

With a largely flat terrain—though hilly in some areas—East Texas is fairly easy to explore, although distances between towns and attractions can be long. U.S. 59 cuts north-south through the heart of East Texas and will take a visitor through some of the region's most interesting places. Starting north of Marshall at Jefferson, it winds south to Nacogdoches and Diboll, skirts the Davy Crockett National Forest, and runs just northwest of Big Thicket National Preserve. From here, visitors can head west to Huntsville, just over an hour north of downtown Houston. The coastal area, centered on Beaumont and Port Arthur, is about an hour and a half east of Houston on Interstate 10.
