Texas Prison Museum

Fodor's Review:

Get behind bars at one of the more unusual museums in Texas. Here visitors can don prison stripes and step into an actual cell. Outside stands a replica guard tower, while inside, a replica death chamber holds a retired electric chair. Museum displays give details on prison life and capital punishment in Texas, as well as the Texas prison rodeo, which ran for many years in Huntsville until 1986. Also on exhibit are crafts produced by prisoners and captured inmate contraband. Admission is free for those younger than 6, but we recommend that kids under 12 skip this museum.

  • Cost: $4
  • Open: Mon.-Sat. 10-5, Sun. noon-5
