On the far western edge of Downtown lies Dealey Plaza, designed as the western gateway to the city and completed in 1941 by the Works Progress Administration. The three-acre space is named for George Bannerman Dealey, a newspaper editor and publisher and civic leader. His statue stands in the middle of the park, just across the street from the Old Red Courthouse. The plaza is now forever remembered as the site of Kennedy's assassination. It was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1993, three decades after the tragedy.
