Fodor's Review:

In South Dallas, this 277-acre National Historic Landmark has the largest collection of 1930s Art Deco architecture in the United States. It is also home to the State Fair of Texas for three weeks each fall. In the park's Hall of State (3939 Grand Ave. 214/421-4500. www.hallofstate.com. Free), murals tell the story of Texas in heroic terms. The Tower Building (open weekdays, 8:15-5:15) has free brochures that describe the buildings and artwork. A self-guided walking tour takes about 90 minutes. Fair Park also contains six major exhibit spaces (many of which are closed Monday or Tuesday): the African American Museum (3536 Grand Ave. 214/565-9026. www.aamdallas.org. Free); the Museum of the American Railroad (1105 Washington St. 214/428-0101. www.dallasrailwaymuseum.com. $5); the Dallas Aquarium (1462 1st Ave. 214/670-8443. $4); the Texas Discovery Gardens (3601 Martin Luther King Blvd. 214/428-7476. www.texasdiscoverygardens.org. $3); the Museum of Nature and Science (3535 Grand Ave. 214/421-3466. www.natureandscience.org. $8.75), which spans three buildings and houses one of Dallas's IMAX theaters; and the Women's Museum (3800 Parry Ave. 214/915-0860. www.thewomensmuseum.org. $5).
