Big Bend National Park Sights

Boquillas, Mexico

  • Town/Village

Updated 10/21/2013

Fodor's Review

Big Bend residents are thrilled that Boquillas Crossing into Mexico, closed since 9/11, has finally reopened to U.S. citizens. Residents of both countries can now use the crossing, about 2 miles north of Rio Grande Village, from 9 am to 6 pm, Wednesday through Sunday. A passport or birth certificate is required. Once a mining boomtown that fed off rich minerals and silver, Boquillas has shrunk to a small pool of families due in part to the closed border crossing, but there

is a restaurant and bar on the other side, plus some shopping. U.S. citizens are allowed to bring back up to $200 in merchandise duty-free. Drive to the crossing from Rio Grande Village, which sells a $5 round-trip boat-ride ticket. The remaining ¾ mile to the village can be made on donkey or horseback. If you do not return to the border by 6 pm, Sunday, you'll have an "extended stay" in Mexico until Wednesday.
