Fodor's Review

The performing arts scene is alive and well in Austin thanks in part to this expansive venue along the shores of Lady Bird Lake. The much-anticipated Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center opened its doors in the spring of 2008, playing host to a wide variety of performing arts groups. It also serves as the permanent home to Ballet Austin, Austin Lyric Opera, and the Austin Symphony Orchestra. In addition, the Long Center for the Performing Arts houses a wing for community

arts education programs.

Austin Symphony Orchestra. Austin Symphony Orchestra presents eight classical concerts, four pops concerts, a holiday favorite performance, a children's Halloween presentation, and many free events throughout the year. 1101 Red River Street, Downtown & the Capitol Area, 78701. 512/476–6064.

Austin Lyric Opera. Austin Lyric Opera, Austin's first professional opera company, has been putting on multiple productions a year for over 25 years. 701 West Riverside Dr., Zilker Park, 78704. 512/472–5927.

Ballet Austin. Ballet Austin, one of the largest classical ballet academies and companies in the country, also offers a variety of classes to the public. 501 West 3rd Street, Downtown & the Capitol Area (Second Street & Warehouse District), 78701. 512/476–9151.
