This cheery, upscale downtown hangout rarely disappoints, which is why it's been an Austin mainstay since 1986. Here you'll find great tortilla soup, imaginative salads, and eclectic entrées such as grilled Indian lamb loin with Makhani cream and cauliflower-ginger relish. The menu usually changes every two to four weeks. A wine-and-beer bar was added in 2007.

Castle Hill was once one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. No longer. The last time we were there the service was horrible and food was mediocre. In 2001, it was No. 2 in the Chronicle restaurant poll. It's now No. 20 and I think that's based largely on people's memories of what the restaurant used to be.
