Housed in an authentic former stockyard (that's an auction house for livestock), The Stockyard restaurant is something of a Nashville institution. An antique building situated in the heart of the historic district, the restaurant boasts three complete floors of authentic Old Nashville ambience -- antique furniture and wallpaper, plus top-drawer dining.

Has something happened in the kitchen at this place---my first visit was 7 years ago. My last visit is exactly that----my last. Poor service, inattentive staff, cold food when it should be hot. The thrill is gone. :((

I cannot name one positive thing about the dinner my husband and I shared here last Friday night with friends. The escargot and crab cake appetizers were good, nothing special. I ordered a bottle of Cab for the table ($80). The waitress tried to pull a scam by gushing on and on about another cab, not on the wine list. She didn't volunteer the price. I asked, and she stumbled & stuttered something inaudible. I asked again & she finally said, $310. We ordered a 3 lb. lobster for the table, we received maybe a 2 lb. one, were charged for 3.5 lbs (at $38/lb., it matters). The claw meat was nearly raw and inedible. When the waitress delivered the lobster, she brought ONE cup of melted butter for the FOUR of us! How CHEESY! All 4 steaks were cold and overcooked - tough, chewy, dry and flavorless. It was obvious what happened - a table of 8 was seated behind us shortly after us. They also ordered lobster for the table. They were served the lobster initially intended for us. The kitchen rushed in another lobster for us, undercooking the claws in their haste. They held our steaks under warming lamps while waiting for the lobster, overcooking and drying them out. The waitress brought the steaks, not waiting to see if they were satisfactory. Nor did we see her again until we had time to finish. She never brought the water and bread we requested. When we complained about the inedible steaks, she offered dessert as compensation. We didn't want dessert - we wanted edible steaks. The steaks were priced at $32 (ala carte) for 7 oz (actually more like 4-5 oz), and I don't believe that at those prices the customer should have to chase down the wait staff and beg to have the steak properly prepared. The nonchalant attitude we received to our complaints about the inedible food proved that this restaurant couldn't care less about their customers. They needn't worry about these four ever returning, or anyone else that I can possibly spread the word to. At $480 + tip, we deserved better food, better service, better response and better accountability. There is nothing I can recommend about this dump. Go elsewhere, a restaurant that makes an effort and serves edible food.

It was a very disappointing meal. My prime rib was a terrible cut of meat. And clearly the Wisconsin definition of Hollandaise and the Nashville definition are not the same. It appeared to be a white sauce that was absolutely flavorless. The night we were there the place was quite empty while other restaurants were very busy, so I think the locals have figured out that this place is overpriced and not very good.

It came highly recommended by my local contacts, but I think this is because it has become an "institution" per se.
The prime rib was certainly very good, but the sides were average at best. Service was excellent almost to the point of being a little too attentive. The menu doesn't make it clear that the steak / seafood price does not include any sides, nor any of the server "recommended" sides. Given the portion size and quality, the sides are quite overpriced, though you won't realize this until the bill comes...
While I really love to support non-chain local restaurants, I can't say that this one is worth the level of support needed.
