Formed in 1928 with the construction of the Santeetlah Dam, Lake Santeetlah, meaning "blue waters" in the Cherokee language, has 76 mi of shoreline, with good fishing for crappie, bream, and lake trout. The lake is managed by Alcoa as a hydro-electric project, but most of the land is owned by the federal government, a part of the Nantahala National Forest.
