Join a NPS ranger and members of the Smoky Mountain Astronomical Society for some stargazing, where you'll learn about the stars and galaxies. The star parties at Cades Cove, usually in late September or October, and sometimes in April, attract as many as 800 people. They begin a little after sunset at the Cades Cove orientation shelter, and last about two hours. Telescopes are provided. You may also want to bring binoculars. The Smoky Mountain Astronomical Society also
has regular star parties at Unicoi Crest on the Cherohala Skyway, an overlook on the Foothills Parkway called Look Rock South, and Tamke-Allan Observatory near Kingston, Tenn. See website for details.
