Once the summer White House for President Coolidge, and host to President Eisenhower as well, this stately stone-and-wood lodge has well-appointed rooms and isolated pine-shaded cabins, many right on the banks of a creek. The cabins are simple and spartan, the motel rooms are comfortable, and the lodge rooms are almost stately, with elegant hardwood furniture and massive stone fireplaces. You can arrange for Jeep rides into the buffalo herds. The excellent, upscale Pheasant Dining Room ($$-$$$) is known for pheasant and buffalo specialties. Pros: Picturesque landscape, free-roaming wildlife offers great photo opportunities, loads of activities. Cons: Isolated from outside amenities and services, but it's a mountain lodge.

I'm wondering if the Fodor's staff has been to the Pheasant Room recently? We dined at the State Game Lodge in July 2008 and were underwhelmed to say the least. The dining room is very dated and shabby for a "high end" dining establishment--it doesn't feel like a game lodge (more like a 1970's supper club) with beat up wooden chairs mixed in with hotel conference-room style metal chairs, dated decor (fake pine garland over the windows and white sheer fabric swags anyone?) and incredibly slow service. We also had several flies buzzing us. While the menu is "gourmet", the chef seems to have left the actual cooking/preparation to poorly trained seasonal help/guest workers who are overwhelmed with trying to pull it off. The dinner salad was generic and room temperature (I actually sniffed for freshness the blue cheese dressing before I poured it), My husband ordered elk which arrived "cremated" to the point he was unable to cut with a steak knife (he was brought a new one cooked medium but the rest of the family was done eating before elk #2 arrived) and the desserts were unmemorable. (We gave up on the SGL and chose to drive into the town of Custer-- about 15 miles away to eat at the phenomenal Sage Creek Grille for remaining meals) Not worth the money for the quality in my opinion.
