Fodor's Expert Review State Game Lodge
13389 U.S. 16A, Custer, South Dakota, 57730, USA
Once the "Summer White House" for President Calvin Coolidge, this classic stone-and-wood lodge is the largest of Custer State Park's hotels. Cabins, many of them on the banks of a creek, range from simple and spartan to deluxe; hotel rooms are awash in earth tones and natural woods; and historical lodge rooms are stately with elegant hardwood furniture and massive stone fireplaces. You can arrange for Jeep rides into the buffalo area. The excellent, upscale dining room—which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner—is known for pheasant and buffalo specialties.
