The Grand Strand was developed as a summer resort, and with its gorgeous beaches, flowering tropical plants, and generally good -- if warm -- weather, it continues to shine during the height of the season. That said, the fall and spring shoulder seasons may be even more pleasant. Warm temperatures allow for beach activities, but the humidity drops and the heat of summer has passed.

Winter -- November through February -- isn't usually thought of as a time to visit the beach, but the region can be quite pleasant. Although there are certainly cold days here and there, for the most part golfers, tennis players, and other outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy their pursuits during these months -- at rock-bottom prices.

Around Hilton Head, the high season follows typical beach-town cycles, with May through August and holidays year-round being the busiest and most costly. However, as local guides will tell you, thanks to the Lowcountry's mostly moderate temperatures year-round, tourists are ever-present. Spring is the most glorious time to visit, especially in Beaufort, as the historic district is awash in blooming azaleas, wisteria, and jasmine.
