Fodor's Review

This wonderful museum tells about the history of the Lowcountry. For instance, you'll learn about the early development of Hilton Head as an island resort from the Civil War to the 1930s. There is also a butterfly enclosure, various hands-on programs for children, guided walks, and much more. Take a walk around the grounds to see marshes, open fields, live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, as well as South Carolina's largest southern red cedar tree, which dates back to 1595. Admission is free, but lectures and tours on various subjects cost $10. Although the museum is just off the Cross Island Parkway, the peaceful grounds make it feel miles away.
