Art and antiques abound in a circa-1820 home turned storybook inn. Look for the little luxuries—down pillows and duvets, a CD player in each room, and fresh flowers. The best rooms open out onto the veranda (No. 2) or the courtyard garden (No. 7). The interior decor is Beaufort traditional coupled with Manhattan panache. Breakfast, afternoon tea, evening hors d'oeuvres, and dessert are included in the rate. Visiting celebrities have included Barbra Streisand, Jeff Bridges, and Dennis Quaid. The remodeled (not so historic) house across the street has eight more rooms, each of which has a gas fireplace, a whirlpool bath, a private entrance, and a porch. Pros: all guests come together for breakfast and other social hours; more private in annex. Cons: annex does not have the charisma of the main inn; in the main house you can hear footsteps on stairs and in hallways.
