The ruins of Sheldon Church, built in 1753, make an interesting stop if you're driving from Beaufort or Charleston to Edisto Island. The church burned down in 1779 and again in 1865. Only the brick walls and columns remain. With its moss-draped live oaks, it has an eerie Lowcountry beauty about it. At dusk it takes on a preternatural cast, the kind of atmosphere that gives rise to the ghost stories that Southern children are raised on. On weekends in and around June you can almost always witness a wedding. No matter, it is a good spot to get off the highway and stretch a spell. You can pick up a snack or some fixin's at the filling station nearby at Gardens Corner. It was modernized about 10 years back, but this highway landmark is still shades of decades past.
