Hilton Head and the Low Country Sights

St. Helena Island

Updated 10/13/2012

Fodor's Review

Nine miles southeast of Beaufort via U.S. 21, St. Helena is the site of the Penn Center Historic District. This island is both residential and commercial, with nice beaches, cooling ocean breezes, and a great deal of natural beauty. It continues to be a stronghold of the Gullah culture, with several

African-American–owned businesses in its "downtown" Frogmore, which is actually getting to be quite the tourist magnet.
