Old Santee Canal Park

Old Santee Canal Park Review

Adventure into the Charleston area's past at Old Santee Canal Park. More than 3 miles of boardwalks and unpaved paths take visitors through Biggin Swamp and along the last portion of the United States' first true canal. Prefer to explore by boat? Rent a canoe for $3 per half hour. An interpretive center details the history of the canal, which was used to transport goods from upstate South Carolina to the port of Charleston from around 1800 to 1850. The on-site Stony Landing Plantation House is furnished with period reproductions, offering a glimpse into what life would have been like for the merchant who built it in the 1840s. Adjacent to the park (and included in its admission) is the Berkeley Museum, which tells the story of Berkeley County's cultural and natural history.
