Why We Like It

For those wanting to spend their money on experiences over a swanky hotel room, this perfectly placed Hilton is a good bet. After a day spent exploring, you’ll return to a comfortable bed and tranquil courtyard.

Fodor's Expert Review

Sought out by many for its ideal historic location, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Charleston-Historic District literally overlooks the famed City Market. Enter through the property’s impeccably restored 1874 portico and friendly attendants will offer you a freshly baked chocolate-chip cookie. Intimate courtyards with bubbling fountains add a tranquil touch to your stay, while a fully loaded business center lets corporate travelers work without a hitch (faxing, photocopying—you can do it all).

Tip Traveling with little ones? Cribs, highchairs, rollaway beds (for king rooms), and babysitting services are just an ask away.

Room

A 19th-century-inspired palette—think soft yellow, maroon, and sage green—colors guest rooms, which hold wooden furnishings and plain, upholstered lounge pieces. The highlight of the space is the comfy bed wrapped in crisp, clean sheets.

You Should Know Some guest suites are starting to show their age, with worn carpet and fraying upholstery.

Bathroom

Bathrooms, which offer a shower-tub combination and granite vanity, are tight. Products by Crabtree & Evelyn are welcome perks.

Lobby

With gold-and-white wallpaper, rich hardwoods, and sizable chandeliers, the open lobby puts off a regal vibe. Swing by on your way in or out for flavored waters and fresh coffee.

Gym

A well-equipped gym with a bevy of free-weights and a few cardio machines lets you stick to your workout regimen while on the road.

You Should Know The fitness center, located on the third floor, lacks any natural light.

Dining

Lighthouse Café sells a Southern-inspired breakfast buffet with hot items and continental staples. Though seating in the dining room is plentiful, for an additional fee, you can have breakfast in bed.

Drinking

Grab a happy hour libation from the Lighthouse Lounge (open Monday through Saturday from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.) and sip it there or alfresco in the flora-filled courtyard.

Getting Around

Parking around the City Market is notoriously tricky, so you’ll want to valet ($32 per day). From there, explore the historic district on foot (if you tire of walking, hop aboard the complimentary DASH trolley). Ride-share or pedicab to restaurants on upper King Street and drive to sights off the peninsula.

Restaurants

Walk across Hayne Street to Hank’s Seafood Restaurant (30-second walk) to get your fancy local seafood fix. For a more family-friendly environment, try the harbor-front Fleet Landing (8-minute walk). If you’re celebrating a special occasion, wine and dine yourself at Peninsula Grill (3-minute walk) and don’t leave without a bite of the 12-layer Ultimate Coconut Cake.

Bars

Soak up views of the Holy City as your imbibe at either the Pavilion Bar (5-minute walk) atop the Market Pavilion Hotel, or The Rooftop (9-minute walk) bar at The Vendue hotel. For a laidback sports-bar scene that locals approve of, post up in the patio of Blind Tiger Pub (9-minute walk).
