As plenty of local and national publications have professed, Martha Lou's is an institution. Martha Lou Gadsden has made her pink cinder-block building into a palace of soul food. And although the building is quirky, with a huge mural of the owner visible from a mile down the road, the food quickly convinces skeptics what all the fuss is about. The chicken comes perfectly cooked to golden brown, and those fried pork chops aren't bad, either. The tireless octogenarian works
all day, preparing collard greens, giblet rice, lima beans, and, yes, even chitterlings. Just a chat with Miss Martha Lou is enough to make the trip worthwhile.
