The Hunley
The Hunley Review
The Hunley became the world's first successful submarine when it was built for the Confederacy in 1864, and then suddenly disappeared into the depths of the sea. Lost for over a century, it was found in 1995 off the coast of Sullivan's Island and raised in 2000. It is being preserved and excavated in a 90,000-gallon tank. A full military funeral with honors was given in 2000 for those men that perished aboard. Tour tickets can be ordered in advance online or on the phone, but you have to pay a service charge.
