J B's Smokeshack
J B's Smokeshack Review
At the sign of the pig (not to mention other rudimentary signs stuck in the ground like "catfish"), this is one of the area's best barbecue joints. A funky find, you will see evidence of the diverse crowd, beat-up pickup trucks to new BMWs—the latter often guests at nearby Kiawah Island. (JB's will deliver out there—for $35.) Most people have the buffet, which includes the barbecue pork, applewood-smoked chicken, and all of the Southern veggies—usually including okra gumbo, butter beans, and coleslaw—plus desserts like banana pudding you can eat for one (very) low price. Barbecue connoisseurs know that JB's takes the big prizes at the competitions and that the ribs and the Angus beef brisket are top-shelf. To further flavor the smoky meats, sauces are served on the side. Just come early, because dinner is over by 8:30.

Sort of stumbled upon JB's by accident after making a run into Charleston and looking for some take home carry out food on the way back to Kiawah. This barbecue joint is pretty small but upon parking in the tiny lot, one gets a great whiff of some decent barbecue. The inside of the restaurant was jam packed with families getting their barbecue fix that included pork, slaw, hash and tasty carolina tea. We got our sandwiches to go that stayed surpisingly warm until we get back to the island. I thought this barbecue was as good as the family favorite, Bessingers which is located on Savannah highway in Charleston/West Ashley area. I recommend a stop at JB's.

I knew I'd like this place once I read the overview in the Fodor's guidebook. It is not difficult to find, yet small enough to get a cozy feeling. The veggies were great and the fried corn puffer thingies a new tasty experience. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the best Southern food I've had, but the buffet will surely fill you up. Leave some room for the yummy desserts, like banana pudding (a must!).
