Known to most for its gelato, Modica often has a line of gelato-lovers in the evenings, especially during Spoleto, after a performance lets out of the Sotille Theater across the street. Less well known are the fat, sassy, panini and garden-crisp salads like the piquant, which gets heat from the Sopressata salami and crunch from roasted pistachios. The house soup is a broth made from portobello mushroom, and on a given day there might also be one made from carrot and sage or creamy Gorgonzola. You can order a decadent gelato cake for a celebration with 24 hours notice. And Italian patrons say that it has the only true espresso in town—Moak, from Sicily—just like owner Marcello and his cousin Vince.
