This area is often called the Slave Market because it's where house slaves once shopped for produce and fish. Today stalls are lined with restaurants and shops selling children's toys, leather goods, and regional souvenirs. Local "basket ladies" weave and sell sweetgrass, pine-straw, and palmetto-leaf baskets—a craft passed down through generations from their West African ancestors.

This is essentially a huge shopping area, very crowded and somewhat confusing, crammed to the rafters with local crafts sellers. If you want to buy trinkets and such, here's a place to do so. Less essential than many other things in the city.
