With the distinct feel of an English country estate, this Relais & Châteaux property has individually decorated rooms with nice touches like Frette linens. This 1906 Greek Revival-style inn completed a much-needed, major refurbishment of its interior and all of its guest rooms. A new casual dining option was created, too. The service and quality of the accommodations are exceptional, and the restaurant ($$$$) is one of the finest in this part of the country. Talented young chef Tarver King continues to prove himself with every challenging, multicourse tasting menu. Diners can also choose from the à la carte menu. Sunday brunch is locally popular, too, but there is no Sunday dinner. The wine events, cooking demonstrations, and tastings are well worth doing. Wine pairings by long-standing sommelier Stéphane Peltier are perfection. Pros: a country retreat excellent for de-stressing; well-geared for weddings and honeymoons; luxurious bedding and electronic blinds (with drapes) make it ideal for sleeping. Cons: far (45 minutes) from downtown Charleston, so not a good base for exploring the city; not near any beaches; very traditional style might feel stuffy to some.
