New England's main highway, Interstate 95, cuts diagonally through Rhode Island, spanning 43 miles from Connecticut to Massachusetts.

Interstate 195 southeast from Providence leads to New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Cape Cod. Route 146 northwest from Providence leads to Worcester, Massachusetts, and to Interstate 90, which passes through the Blackstone Valley. U.S. 1 follows much of the Rhode Island coast east from Connecticut before turning north to Providence. Route 138 heads east from U.S. 1 to Jamestown, Newport, and Portsmouth, in easternmost Rhode Island. Route 114 leads south from East Providence down through the East Bay community of Bristol and then to Newport.

Once you're here, a car is your best way to get around the state, although parts of Providence and Newport are walkable and have reliable public buses. Parking is easy to find outside of cities, though challenging and sometimes expensive in Downtown Providence and Newport.
