Smith's Castle

Fodor's Review:

Built in 1678 by Richard Smith Jr. and nearly demolished in the 1940s, this castle is a beautifully preserved saltbox plantation house on the quiet shore of an arm of Narragansett Bay. It was the site of many orations by Roger Williams, from whom Smith bought the surrounding property. The grounds have one of the first military burial grounds (open during daylight hours) in the country: a marked mass grave holding 40 colonists killed in the Great Swamp battle of 1676, during which the Narragansetts were nearly annihilated, ending King Philip's War in Rhode Island.
