Fodor's Review

Built in 1773–74 and designed by Joseph Brown, this brick structure on South Main Street is part of the Rhode Island School of Design these days. Though not open to the public, it is historically significant. Tea was burned here in March 1775, and the upper floors were used as barracks for French soldiers during the Revolutionary War. From 1832 to 1878, Market House served as the seat of city government. A plaque shows the height reached by floodwaters during the Great Hurricane of 1938.
