Fodor's Review

You're as likely to hear Italian as English in this neighborhood. The stripe down Atwells Avenue is painted in red, white, and green, and a huge pignoli (pinenut), an Italian symbol of abundance and quality, hangs on an arch soaring over the street. Grocers sell pastas, pastries, and usually hard-to-find Italian groceries. During the Federal Hill Stroll (usually held in early June) festivalgoers enjoy music and sample signature cuisine at numerous eateries within a ¾-mile stretch of Atwells Avenue.

Excellent neighborhood for Italian eats

This is the area to come to for Italian restaurants and shops, specifically Atwells Avenue. There are several good places here, including Costantino's Venda Ravioli (store and food service), Pastiche (desserts), and Angelo's Civita Farnese (cheap red sauce basics), as well as more upscale spots like Mediterraneo and Pane e Vino. Broadway has a good laid-back brunch spot, Julian's.

Don't miss Camilles and Patische

I know that Fodor's says that there is an arch with a "pinecone" on the top but it is a Pineapple which means "welcome". At the left of the arch is a wonderful restaurant called Camille's which has phenomenal food and a wonderful atmosphere. For desserts that are to "die for" don't miss Pastiche, which is located through a courtyard on the right and runs parallel to the main street.
