Fodor's Review

Founded in 1764, this Ivy League institution is the nation's seventh-oldest college and has more than 40 academic departments, including the Warren Alpert Medical School. On a stroll through the College Hill campus you'll encounter Gothic and Beaux-Arts structures as well as the imposing Prospect Street gates, which open twice a year—in fall to welcome the students and spring to bid them farewell. Free one-hour university tours conducted by current students depart from the Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center on the Main Green. Public events include outdoor Shakespeare performances and a summer open-air movie series hosted by the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts. The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology on the ground floor of Manning Hall has exhibits showcasing artifacts from around the world. The David Winton Bell Gallery in the List Art Center hosts several major art exhibitions a year.
