The city's best spot for a romantic meal is Table 21 in a private alcove at Ellen Slattery's stellar Downcity restaurant. Across the street from the Trinity Rep theater, Gracie's mixes sophistication with whimsy in the main dining room with star-theme decor. Executive chef Matthew Varga harvests many of his ingredients from the restaurant's rooftop garden. You can't go wrong with the seasonal, house-made gnocchi; Varga prepared a recent version with port-and-fennel sausage, stewed tomatoes, Swiss chard, and provolone. A three-course prix-fixe menu for $45 is available nightly, but for true excitement, opt for the five-, seven- or nine-course tasting menu ($85–$120) and see what pleasures come your way.
