This Roman templelike building, complete with Doric columns, was built in 1747 and has been in use for that purpose ever since, making it America's oldest lending library. Although it may look like a Roman temple, it is actually made of wood; the exterior paint is mixed with sand to make it resemble cut stone. The library's paintings include works by Gilbert Stuart and Rembrandt Peale. Free guided tours are given on weekday mornings at 10:30 AM.
